To set up the eye-tracker for first use follow the instructions below. Make sure you are not electrically charged. If possible ground yourself. Do not walk away during setup.
For a fixed setup you should go through this once. If many people have access to the device it is recommended to regularly check the camera’s focal ratio and focus distance (points 3 and 10).
-
Install the eye-tracker software as described in Installing the user application suite.
-
Mount the eye-tracker onto the stand. Use the highest position.
-
Check if the focal ratio (f-number) of the camera lens is set correctly. For the R1 (16mm lens) it should be 2.0. For the R2 (25mm lens) it should be 2.2.
-
Remove the camera lens cap if applicable. Take care not to touch the glass of the filter screwed into the lens.
-
Connect the Micro-B connector of the provided USB-cable to the camera.
-
Connect the other side of the USB-cable to a USB-3.0 port on to the computer. A USB-3.0 port is usually blue colored or has a SuperSpeed logo.
-
Connect the barrel jack of the power supply to the eye-tracker and insert the power plug into the wall socket.
-
Start the eyevec-control application and go to the Setup page.
-
Check and adjust the eye-tracker position so it corresponds with the dimensional drawing. Horizontally the center of the eye-tracker should roughly align with the center of your face.
-
The focus ring of the camera lens should be adjusted to get a sharp image at the desired focus distance. There are a few options to do this. First loosen the camera focus ring fixation screw.
-
For a rough focus adjustment hold your head at the appropriate distance from the eye-tracker (ask someone to measure the distance from the orange line on the lens to your eyes) and adjust the focus ring. The bright green bars below the eye-boxes should be as small as possible. Then gently tighten the focus ring fixation screw.
-
For a quick adjustment of the focus distance using a DIY focus calibration stick follow the instructions in Quick camera focus distance adjustment.
-
For a proper focus calibration (recommended) follow the instructions in Calibrating camera focus distance.
-
Once the focus distance has been calibrated don’t be tempted to adjust the focus ring if for some participant the image seems out of focus. Just move the participant’s chair. |
